These guys had already been painted white and were handed to me by my mom: Paint them please! she said to me. The one on the left is a Huichol nutcracker – inspired by the sacred deer, payote, cosmos and fire. On the right is brotha man skeleton celebrating Día de los Muertos, which explains his marigold eyes.
I was only passing through El Paso for a few days in December 2009 on my way to Juarez. Just between the two cities, I painted this rock at the Transmountains, which divides the US from México.

I love those nutcrackers. When I have the house decorated for Christmas they are one thing that everybody notices. If I could find the plain wood nutcrackers I’d be asking for more. I love your art. – Mom
